Mary Louise Porter and Karen Schmidt

Whether urban and rural, there is no place like Louisiana, and Author John Kemp has enlisted 37 of the state’s best artists to all express “their place" on canvas in his latest book, "EXPRESSIONS OF PLACE: The Contemporary Louisiana Landscape." Kemp and two of the Northwest Louisiana artists featured in the book, Mary Louise Porter and Karen Schmidt will be featured in a special exhibition opening at artspace.

Once seldom seen on anyone other than biker babes, sideshow freaks and old salts, the tattoo has become a $1.65 billion dollar industry and today is proudly displayed as fine art in galleries from London to San Francisco as well as on 36% of all U.S. Millennial adults. On August 25th, renowned Ringling College of Art oil painter, illustrator and teacher turned tattoo artist, Shawn Barber, will open his exhibit of tattoo painting and portraiture at artspace in downtown Shreveport.

Mollie Walton Corbett

OUTLIER is a multi-sensory exhibit that will include large-scale prints of real victims, including Corbett, that will hang on black walls amidst a set that represents the “ruins” or negative aspects of the sexual assault—an ornate birdcage near the assailant’s feet with words inside that tell something personal about the memory of the assault, trash strewn in the bottom of the scene and hope hanging above the victim in the form of words of affirmation such as “self worth,” “redemption” and “courage.” These are photographs of victims from our own neighborhoods who have each bravely agreed to share their stories visually so that others might not have to suffer as they have.

nick cave spotted: an exhibition of short films

Shreveport has been getting to know Soundsuit artist Nick Cave—in raffia Soundsuits rustling along the Mardi Gras parade routes, creating elaborately beaded blankets alongside the residents at Providence House, VOA LightHouse, VOA McAdoo and Mercy Center, and dancing with students at Northwestern State University and the Inter City Row Dance Company. Now you can see this world-renowned artist in a new way—leaping, spinning, dancing and hopping across the silver screen in the premier of “Spotted,” a capsule exhibition of five films that have become a significant part of the work Cave does to push the boundaries of art and performance.
