Josephine took up painting with Judy Gosset in 2005, studied with Don Edwards, Robin Clawson and currently with Christie Cassell. Her early studies of Irish landscapes were the basis for her first shows. Her subjects are often serene and influenced by her European travels and study of classical work at museums. She prefers painting with oils due to their history and permanence.

Josephine's career in art was prompted by her success with an oil painting, “Canoes on the River” in 2003, which was selected for the 2004 Volunteers of America calendar. Her photograph, “Oakland Angel,” was included in the 2005 VOA calendar and received the Merit of Achievement Award. In 2007, “Kylmore Castle” was included in the VOA Calendar. This success encouraged continued study and future works. Public art projects include a six-foot catfish, called “Mufasa,” part of a fund-raising project for the Juvenile Justice Program. Josephine's work appeared in one-artist shows at: Columbia CafÈ, The Little Shanty, Shreveport's Art Space and an upcoming show at Mrs. McGregor's Garden (Fall, 2011).

Current work focuses on garden scenes, and particularly flowers from her mother and grandmother's garden that have been influential in her life. Josephine's garden contains many roses and camellias she learned about as a child. Spending time in the garden is not only relaxing, but inspirational to painting. Dogwoods, camellias, hydrangeas and roses are central to many of Josephine's works.

Josephine teaches painting to students, aged 4 to 12, in her studio and offers private lessons by arrangement. Her works are available now at The Little Shanty, Mrs. McGregor's Garden and through online information at www.JosephineCarmody.com.
